I can’t speak for other states, but California disability services are a joke. I guess it must just be a rumor that California has the ‘best’ resources to aid the disadvantaged – if this is the ‘best’ we’re all in trouble. The state’s answer to every problem was never executed by the same state employee that had to solve such problems. That seems to be the bigger issue here – people that are in charge of solving such complicated issues like transportation, job readiness or simply ‘helping’ others, have never actually walked the line they drew for others. All throughout school, your teachers would say, “Show your work!” Meaning show me your answer makes sense to you and everyone else involved. That is exactly what the State of California needs to do: ‘show their work’. Because it’s not working! For example, their answer to transportation – Dial-A-Ride – absolutely worthless. They are constantly late, unorganized, miscommunicating and careless. If I had to rely on this company to get me to work on time everyday, I would be out of a job by the very first week of my employment. The State of California has also created an organization to solely help people with disabilities all along the spectrum, from physical to mental. This organization is called The Department of Rehabilitation. Not really sure what they do there… They haven’t helped me with anything I have reached out to them for. The DOR’s job training is down right humiliating. Their training is based on the assumption that you must not bathe or smell good because that was a big part of their 5 week training I attended. The counselor’s there do not understand the true obstacles we face and refuse to amend their training to actually help their clients. It’s just another joke. I recently have given up on a long battle with Ventura County Tax Assessor’s Office. I first contacted them many months ago to obtain a large print bill. A very simple request for a government agency, right? Wrong. My county’s office had never heard of such a request and they could not help me further. However, they recommended I either call the local ADA’s office (which I did and no response) or use my computer to enlarge the bill. I may be missing something here or I am just completely entitled to request such a thing. And of course, just as I suspected – tax season came and went without my knowledge. I thought the deadline was the 18th of April – not the 10th! So here I am all pissy about life and stuff, because now I have to eat over $300 in penalties because no one could “help’. So today I put on my big girl panties and called the Department of rehabilitation – “They surely can help to provide me a resource for this issue, right? Wrong again!” After discussing my issue with 2 different counselors and detailing my every move that lead me to call them for their assistance, I get a more than worthless solution. Firstly they recommend I reach out to my county’s assessors office and ask them to send me a large print bill and secondly they recommend I print my bill at a Kinko’s – where they can enlarge my bill for a fee………………. You can’t make this shit up. Absolutely worthless government jobs. I always joke with my husband about getting a government job or work for Caltrans, I wouldn’t ever have to worry about actually working. THE END
